
Double glazing was invented for cold climates. It still earns its keep in India — but for reasons most brochures get wrong.
Insulated glazing was developed to stop heat escaping from cold houses. India's problem is the reverse: keeping heat out. So it is a fair question whether a sealed double-glazed unit is worth paying for here.
What a DGU actually does
Two panes, a spacer, and a hermetically sealed cavity filled with dry air or argon. Gas conducts heat far worse than glass, so the cavity is the insulator. The inner pane therefore sits much closer to room temperature than a single pane would.
The heat argument
Most solar heat arrives as radiation, and plain double glazing does relatively little about radiation — it mainly slows conduction. So a plain DGU on a west wall helps less than people expect.
Pair it with a low-E or reflective coating on the outer pane, though, and the picture changes completely: the coating rejects a large share of the radiation before it enters the cavity at all. That combination is what actually reduces cooling load in an Indian summer.
The noise argument
This is where a DGU pays for itself in a city. Sound has to cross glass, cavity and glass again, losing energy at every boundary. Make the two panes different thicknesses so they do not resonate together, and use an acoustic laminated inner pane, and a busy road drops to a background murmur.
For most of our Gurugram and Delhi customers, noise — not heat — turns out to be the reason they are glad they upgraded.
The condensation argument
In a Delhi winter, a single pane runs cold enough for indoor humidity to condense on it, which over years rots plaster and grows mould on the reveal. The inner pane of a DGU stays warm enough that this mostly stops happening.
Where we would skip it
A shaded north-facing bathroom ventilator on a quiet internal street does not need a sealed unit. Spend that budget on the road-facing bedrooms instead. Glazing should be specified per elevation, not per house.
