uPVC is low maintenance, not no maintenance. Four small habits keep the hardware working for the full life of the frame.
uPVC frames outlive their hardware by a wide margin, and hardware fails from neglect rather than age. Twenty minutes a year is the whole commitment.
Clean with soap and water
Warm water, a little dish soap, a soft cloth. Nothing else. Avoid thinner, acetone, abrasive powders and hard scrubbing pads — they micro-scratch the surface, and dirt then keys into those scratches and stops coming off.
Vacuum the tracks
On sliding windows the track collects grit that acts as sandpaper on the rollers. Vacuum it, wipe with a damp cloth, then dry it. Never grease a sliding track: grease traps dust and makes the problem worse. A dry silicone spray is fine.
Oil the moving hardware
Hinges, locking points and strikers take a single drop of light machine oil twice a year. Work the handle a few times to distribute it. This is the difference between hardware that lasts five years and hardware that lasts twenty.
Wipe and check the gaskets
Clean the rubber with a damp cloth. If a section has flattened or hardened, note it and ask for a replacement — gaskets are consumable and cheap, and a failed one is what causes the whistling and the dust.
Twice a year, check the drainage slots
Same as the monsoon checklist: clear them with a wire and flush with water.
What to leave to us
