
Nine window types, what each is genuinely good at, and which rooms they belong in.
Style is not only an aesthetic decision. How a window opens changes how much it ventilates, how well it seals and whether you can clean it. A quick tour.
Sliding
Sashes run horizontally on rollers. Nothing projects, which is why it is the default in Indian apartments. The trade-off: only half the opening ventilates at a time, and a sliding interlock cannot seal as tightly as a compressed sash. Best for balconies, kitchens and any wall furniture sits against.
Casement
Side-hung, swings open like a door. The full opening becomes ventilation and multi-point locking pulls the sash onto its gaskets, so it is the tightest-sealing common window. Best for bedrooms and any elevation where noise or dust is the problem.
Tilt & turn
One handle, two actions: tilt inward at the top for secure ventilation, or swing fully inward to clean. Essential above the fourth floor where you cannot reach the outside face. Slightly more expensive, and it needs clear space inside the room.
Top hung
Hinged at the head, opens outward, so the sash shelters its own opening. The only common window you can safely leave open in the rain. Bathrooms, kitchens, stairwells and utility areas.
Fixed / picture
Does not open, so there is no leakage path at all — the best thermal and acoustic numbers of any type, and the slimmest frame. Usually combined with an operable unit in the same frame rather than used alone.
Bay
Three or more panels projecting past the wall line. Adds floor area and light from three directions, at real extra cost because the corner posts must carry load.
French
Full-height double sashes with no central mullion, so both open to a completely clear aperture. Living room to terrace, bedroom to balcony.
Combination
Any mix of the above welded into one structural frame. Wide openings, no joints between units, single clean sight line.
Arch
A curved head bent to follow arched masonry, rather than a square window with plaster infill above it. Villa and heritage elevations.
A quick rule of thumb
Casement where noise and dust matter, sliding where space is tight, tilt-and-turn where you are high up, top-hung where rain is the issue, and fixed wherever the view matters more than the airflow.
